INDIANAPOLIS -- The race to replace Mike Pence on the Indiana Republican gubernatorial ticket has a fourth candidate.
Republican Sen. Jim Tomes sent an email to members of the Indiana GOP’s state committee, announcing his intention to seek the Republican nomination for governor. Tomes says his six years as a state senator gives him legislative experience while he’s learned the relationship between other government branches and agencies.
The southwest Indiana native joins Lt. Gov. Eric Holcomb and U.S. Reps. Susan Brooks and Todd Rokita in the hunt for the nomination. Tomes would arguably be the most conservative candidate. And in his announcement to the committee he mentions his support for anti-abortion measures and marriage between one man and one woman. Tomes is also one of the legislature’s most vocal and ardent gun rights supporters.
The 22-member GOP state committee will meet on July 26 to choose the nominee.
