President Donald Trump will make his 10th campaign trip to Indiana Thursday, in part to boost Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Braun.
Both Braun and Demoratic opponent U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) released campaign ads that feature Trump ahead of the president’s visit.
Braun’s ad hearkens back to Trump’s last visit to the state; it features video of the president’s call to unseat Donnelly. Donnelly’s stresses the Democrat’s bipartisanship. It notes the Hoosier lawmaker supports Trump’s proposal for a wall on the southern border.
Mike Downs Center For Indiana Politics At Purdue University-Fort Wayne Director Andrew Downs says Donnelly’s use of Trump in ads must be calculated.
“He does run the risk of alienating Democrats. The issue here is, can he, if he ties it to a policy, is it a policy folks also find acceptable?" Downs says. "So the Right to Try is an example, is something that a lot of Democrats will say ‘Well, I’m good with that.’ They may not be good with the wall.”
Thousands are expected at the Evansville rally.
