Some anti-abortion advocates see new hope for a total ban on abortions in Indiana after recent changes at the U.S. Supreme Court.

But House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis) still isn’t sold on advancing such a ban.

The recent shift in balance on the Supreme Court with the appointment of conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh generated hope among anti-abortion advocates. Some believe it might create an opportunity for the Court to overturn its longstanding precedent of legal abortion.

But Bosma says he’s still not sure the current Court would upend abortion rights.

“I don’t know that Indiana wants to carry that baton for the entire nation and the cost of that," Bosma says.

Rep. Curt Nisly (R-Goshen) has authored a total abortion ban in recent years – a bill that never went anywhere at the Statehouse. But he sees momentum.

“I think the idea’s much more mainstream than it even was a year or two ago,” Nisly says.

Recent public polls suggest more Hoosiers oppose an abortion ban than those who support one.
