Lawmakers are nearing the ultimate version of this session’s major gambling bill.
The biggest pieces of the gaming bill remain intact: Gary casino operator Spectacle Entertainment could move one of its two licenses to a new facility in a more desirable location in the city. It would have to pay $20 million, over five years, to do that.
The bill would also clear the way for a new casino in Terre Haute. If that happens, Spectacle must forfeit its second license. But there’s a new provision, says Sen. Mark Messmer (R-Jasper). Spectacle would get a $40 million tax credit for giving up that license.
“They’re giving up real dollars and they’re getting real dollars,” Messmer says.
The final measure would also legalize and tax sports betting statewide – including mobile gambling on sporting events.
Both chambers must approve the final version of the bill.
