Indiana’s Judicial Nominating Commission meets this week to choose a state Supreme Court Chief Justice for a new five-year term.
Current Chief Justice Loretta Rush is widely expected to be reappointed.
The Judicial Nominating Commission is made up of three gubernatorial appointees and three members named by attorneys in the state. And every five years, the commission chooses a Chief Justice from among the members of the state Supreme Court.
Indiana University McKinney School of Law professor Joel Schumm says Rush will almost certainly be the pick.
“And I’d be very surprised if anyone else on the court expresses interest in wanting the job," Schumm says. "She’s been doing a terrific job, so I would expect her to be unanimously reappointed.”
Schumm notes the other four members of the court will each address the commission.
“My guess is they will say what a great job she’s doing and talk about what things are important to the court and to the chief justice,” Schumm says.
The commission meets Wednesday.
