A private Republican caucus will choose Indiana’s newest state lawmaker Monday evening.
The seat recently opened up after Gov. Eric Holcomb named now-former Rep. Holli Sullivan (R-Evansville) as secretary of state. Sullivan replaced Secretary Connie Lawson, who retired.
Indiana does not use special elections to replace state lawmakers who leave before their term expires. Instead, a caucus of precinct committeepeople, belonging to whichever party controls the seat, choose a replacement to serve out the remainder of the retiring lawmaker’s term.
In the last four years, 14 lawmakers have joined the General Assembly via private caucuses.
