More than 18,000 unaccompanied minors were taken into custody at the U.S.-Mexico border in March, according to federal data. Many are fleeing dire situations in Mexico and Latin America. Some of the children may find foster homes in Indiana.
Bethany Christian Services’ transitional foster care program provides a temporary homeforunaccompanied children who havefledto the U.S. border.
Bethany Neal, foster care licensor, said the group is looking for families who speak other languages, among many other needs.
"There’s often the need for families who can take in sibling groups or children with medical needs. We've also seen a need for foster homes for pregnant or parenting teen mothers," Neal said.
The program in Indiana has fostered more than 80 children since 2019.
