Tax season has begun, and a group of local and national organizations are partnering to help Hoosiers make the most of it.
At a press conference Monday morning, United Way of Central Indiana launched this year’s Indy Free Tax Prep program. It’s open to individuals and households with incomes below $66,000. It’s a product of multiple public and private organizations, including The Indianapolis Public Library, United Way of Central Indiana and the Internal Revenue Service.
“It doesn't have to be hard,” said Kate McKnight, a spokesperson with the IRS. “It's your money and we want you to get it. We want to make sure that people who are entitled to refunds get the refunds.”
The Purdue Extension office is involved to provide financial education and asset building programs.
Since the program started in 2015, volunteers have prepared over $34 million dollars in tax refunds for Central Indiana residents.
Several Indy Free Tax Prep sites are set up in Boone, Hendricks, Morgan and Marion counties. Locations can be found online at the United Way of Central Indiana’s website.
