A federal judge ruled that parts of a lawsuit filed by Dreasjon Reed’s mother can go forward.
Reed’s mother, Demetree Wynn, is suing the city of Indianapolis, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Randal Taylor, IMPD Deputy Police Chief Kendale Adams, and Officer De’Joure Mercer over her son’s death. Wynn filed the suit last June.
Reed was shot and killed by Mercer in May 2020 on the northside of Indianapolis following a police pursuit. He was 21 years old. Following an investigation by Indiana State Police, a grand jury decided to not indict Mercer.
Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson’s order filed Thursday in U.S. District rules that some allegations made in the suit may go to trial, including excessive force, inadequate medical care and failure to train claims.
A trial is currently set to begin on June 20.
