Franklin was born in Indianapolis in 1928. His style was influenced by the early Naptown blues duo of Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell - but Franklin developed his own unique sound. On this edition, hear Franklin’s early recordings with blues greats including Sunnlyand Slim and Tampa Red.

We’ll also have a Halloween edition of Rebel Music with Karla Lopez-Owens. Karla’s guest will be the best-selling author Silvia Moreno-Garcia, known for her gothic horror novels.

Legendary Indianapolis club DJ Thomas J. Griffin, also known as Sparkle Soxx, was one of the first club DJs in Indianapolis. In 1973, he began spinning funk and soul music at venues across the city. He visits Echoes of Indiana Avenue to discuss his multi-decade DJ career and notable work in broadcasting as an announcer for WTLC and The Reggie Miller Show.

2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the birth of hip-hop music. Explore influential figures in Indianapolis' hip-hop history, from the 1970s to today, including Reggie Griffin, Rickie Clark, B-Boy Chilly T, Paul Middlebrook, Grover Wilcher, Steve Weakley, Rusty Redenbacher, N.A.P., B.M.W. and Patrice 2 Fine, one of the first female rappers in Indianapolis to appear on record.
