Parents of medically complex children say the changes made by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration following the 2023 Medicaid forecasting error left families without critical services.

Indiana Disability Rights and ACLU of Indiana filed a federal complaint on behalf of two Indiana children who receive attendant care from their parents as well as the Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services Commission.

Family caregivers of medically complex children will soon no longer be able to provide attendant care, meaning they have to transition to other Medicaid programs. The Family and Social Services Administration provided updates this week on one of the main programs families can shift to in July.

With about two months left before a significant change to a Medicaid program for medically complex individuals, some families say the Family and Social Services Administration has failed to communicate with caregivers and other stakeholders. A grassroots organization of family caregivers met with the governor and FSSA to express its concerns with the change.
