Gary Mayor Jerome Prince appears to have been unseated. Unofficial results late Tuesday showed State Senator Eddie Melton ahead of the current mayor for the Democratic Party nomination, with almost 59 percent of the vote.

The incident happened Saturday while Democratic Sen. Eddie Melton of Gary was taking part in a rally sponsored by the Indiana Racial Justice Alliance.

The surprising announcement comes shortly after the last campaign fundraising period ended, and leaves two Democrats vying for their party's nomination.

State Sen. Eddie Melton's campaign says Republican state schools Superintendent Jennifer McCormick will join in the announcement.

The Gary lawmaker launched his campaign in his hometown with a crowd of about 200 supporters. He was introduced at the kickoff by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick, who is a Republican.
