A state commission has approved a new nature preserve in Greene County.

A fire Sunday caused damage to the Plummer Creek Covered Bridge, also known as the A.M. Kennedy & Sons Covered Bridge, in Bloomfield.

The Indiana Natural Resources Commission recently approved the Dilcher-Turner Canyon Forest Nature Preserve in Greene County, a few miles south of the village of Hendricksville.

Classes are canceled Friday in Eastern Greene district in Bloomfield in Greene County.

Designs are being drawn up for new visitors center exhibits about the wildlife habitats of a popular southwestern Indiana bird-watching site.

The 12-year-old project provided nearly $200,000 worth of supplies to 525 teachers in Monroe, Brown, Lawrence, Owen and Greene counties last year.
