Indiana lawmakers begin exploring changes to homeowners association powers

Indiana lawmakers took their first steps this week in exploring whether changes are needed in the ways homeowners associations operate.

HOAs would not be able to stop people from having beehives on their property as long as they’re actively maintained for honey and placed 100 feet from residents with bee allergies.

HOAs would still get to decide how many hives residents can keep - and where - under the bill. Indiana already has a law that prevents cities and towns from banning beehives on private property.

Rep. Ed Clere (R-New Albany), a member of the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Task Force, said he is concerned about the lack of transparency from FSSA around the data used to make these decisions.
