A night of minor league baseball in downtown Indianapolis this weekend held special meaning for a group of Indiana’s Indigenous people.

The Indianapolis Indians baseball team announced plans to keep their name while partnering with the Miami Nation of Indians of Indiana.

The announcement comes amid a renewed call to stop using nicknames, imagery and characterizations considered offensive by Native Americans.

The American Indian Center of Indiana planned Zoom conversations for interested parties this week in hopes of drafting a resolution calling for the removal of the minor-league teams name and any imagery using offensive or false characterizations of Native Americans.
