The Kennedy King Memorial Initiative hosted its 56th annual commemorative event Thursday to celebrate the lives and legacies of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy.

A new exhibit unveiled Friday features the historic significance of Robert F. Kennedy's speech in Indianapolis announcing the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

WFYI Producer Aric Hartvig sat down to talk with some who were in the audience that evening, and shares their memories of the historic event.

Hundreds gathered to commemorate the 50th anniversary of a speech by Robert F. Kennedy, in which he announced the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to a crowd in Indianapolis.

The exhibits commemorate the 50th anniversary of his remarks and will be up through early April.

The Kennedy King Memorial Initiative will hold their annual program Tuesday in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. The event will commemorate the historic speech delivered by Sen. Robert F. Kennedy in Indianapolis, April 4, 1968 -- the night Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was killed.

Indiana Repertory Theatre's original play takes the audience back to the night of the MLK assassination through the eyes of a young Indianapolis woman. Geneva is a junior at Shortridge High School hoping to see Robert Kennedy speak, but she, like the others, has no idea it is not just a routine political campaign stop.
