The federal lawsuit, filed last week by eight teachers who taught at Meadowlawn Elementary School in Monticello at the time of the January 2019 incident, names as defendants the White County Sheriff's Department, four deputies and the department's current and former sheriff.

A bill up for passage in the Senate this week would require schools, beginning in 2021, to have a relationship with a mental health care provider before getting school safety dollars.

Two bills lawmakers passed this year qualify more schools for the states secured school grants, and expand how schools can use the money.

However, the bill has garnered some criticism from lawmakers who say it's not enough.
