The Sierra Club said data centers with big energy needs — and Gov. Mike Braun's focus on keeping coal plants open — are largely responsible for the changes.

Two environmental groups say if an Indiana aluminum smelter doesnt clean up its act theyll sue. The Sierra Club and the Environmental Integrity Project announced their intent to sue the Alcoa Warrick smelter for water pollution violations on Tuesday.

The pipeline would bring gas from other states to two small natural gas plants in southern Indiana that CenterPoint Energy intends to build.

The Sierra Club has won a lawsuit against BP for pollution violations at its Whiting refinery in northwest Indiana. The plant exceeded its limits for particle pollution from 2015 to 2018 and also failed to do required follow-up tests.

The environmental group says some regulated utilities like Duke are self-scheduling coal plants. That means theyre deciding to run coal plants even when energy from the grid is cheaper.

The Sierra Club says state and federal environmental agencies have allowed BP to emit too much particulate matter. BP says it's prepared to "vigorously defend" its operations.

A group of environmental and health advocates are especially concerned about Indiana's coal ash ponds and protecting federal legislation to clean them up.

Environmental group the Sierra Club will launch digital and print ads this weekend pushing Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly to oppose legislation curtailing the Environmental Protection Agency's new Clean Power Plan. He is being targeted as a potential swing vote in the Senate.
