Local veterans in need of assistance during the federal government shutdown still have places to turn.
Although the doors aren’t locked, the building that houses major veteran service organizations in downtown Indianapolis is effectively shut down. That includes the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) offices, but the group is still working to provide free assistance for America’s injured heroes at an alternate location.
The need is significant, according to DAV Supervisor Eric McGinnis. "We see 20 to 30 veterans a day, and triple that in phone calls." he said.
DAV is helping veterans file claims at its location on West 16th Street until normal operations resume at VA contact offices. McGinnis says they’ve been told there’s enough funding to keep some services running through the end of this month. DAV plans to continue assisting vets the duration of the shutdown.
