Hoosier in downtown Indy will be looking towards the sky to catch a glipse of a familiar holiday icon.
It was 1947 when the Cherub first appeared to shoppers atop a clock at what was then the L.S. Ayres department store.
The story is that the child angel watches over holiday shoppers until Santa takes over on Christmas Eve. The Cherub takes up it’s perch rather mysteriously, returning every Thanksgiving morning for over 65 years except for a brief hiccup in the early 1990’s.
After Macy’s took over the store the cherub was moved to St. Louis resulting in much public outcry. The company then donated the sculpture to Indianapolis for residents and visitors to delight.
