An Indianapolis group will host its 14th annual ROCC-a-Thon on Thursday – that stands for Reaching Out to Citizens Affected by Crime.
Legacy House is a nonprofit that provides counseling and therapy for victims of violence.
Executive Director Michael Hurst says national conversations around gun violence, as well as the #MeToo movement, have brought needed attention to the long-term consequences victims often face.
The event showcases a variety of resources for those people, all the way from local social workers to The Office of the Indiana Attorney General.
“It’s kind of a celebration of resilience and recovery for victims," Hurst says. "But it’s also a way for us as a community to reach out to victims and to the general public, and let them know what’s out there.”
Hurst says he thinks the primary reason people don’t seek help is victim blaming. Many who experience trauma from some kind of violence, he says, don’t seek help because they’re afraid of being stigmatized.
The 4-hour event takes place on Monument Circle, and is free and open to the public.
