Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett announced the appointment of Tamika Catchings to the Indianapolis Airport Authority Board on Monday.

Catchings is a retired Indiana Fever player, a four-time Olympic athlete and has been involved in a variety of community efforts since she retired from the WNBA in 2016.

She is the 11th member of the board, a new seat  created by lawmakers in a bill passed during the 2018 legislative session.

Executive Director Mario Rodriguez says it’s good to have people like Catchings on the board who don’t have a background in airport management.

“Their value is…they’re here to represent the community at large. Because this is the community’s asset,” Rodriguez says.

In a statement Hogsett says he has long admired Catchings as a civic leader.

“I am certain her extensive experience and heart for Indianapolis leave her well prepared to help oversee our city’s award-winning airport,” Hogsett says.

The board oversees municipal airports and votes on things like the annual budget, new rules and regulations, and the acquisition and zoning of property.
