Gleaners and Anthem announce extension of partnership.

A $1.5 million gift to Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana will help serve more people.

Gleaners President and CEO John Elliot says the organization is strategically focused on the intersection of hunger and health. It aims to increase the amount of food delivered as well as the nutritional value.

"It matters," says Elliot, "the food that our neighbors eat and frankly, correcting the problem of the food they don’t eat."

Anthem will provide the funding over the next three years to support central Indiana programs, including senior shopping and mobile pantries.

Elliot says many people are facing numerous challenges, and food assistance can help families on a path to self-sufficiency.

"Let’s figure out how we get that family taking care of themselves." says Elliot, "They don’t want to be in that situation of poverty and struggle and challenge."

An estimated 13 percent of Hoosiers face food insecurity.
