A new project to feed families impacted by COVID-19 transitioned Lucas Oil Stadium into a food distribution center.
Food assistance organizations report two to three times the need in Indiana. Midwest Food Bankpartnered with the Salvation Army and Second Helpings to launch the effort.
Midwest Food Bank Executive Director John Whitaker says about 20 Indiana National Guardsmen started this week.
"So right now we have these guardsmen who are labeling cans of tomatoes and building boxes that we are going to fill mid next week," says Whitaker.
Lucas Oil volunteered some of its employees as well.
The goal is to pack 10,000 boxes for distribution across the state, about half of which will remain in Marion County. The Salvation Army will distribute the meal boxes to partners in the coming weeks.
Whitaker says they aim to raise money to sustain the effort.
