Indianapolis faith leaders held the first in a series of peace walks Thursday night. The gathering in Haughville comes as Indianapolis deals with a surge in violent crime.
Rev. Charles Harrison of the Ten Point Coalition said change needs to happen in the communities most impacted.
"Going back to where residents, ministers, community leaders are patrolling their own neighborhoods, so that’s what we’re trying to create," Harrison said.
The walks are one of the moves the group of pastors has urged the city to support. Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett joined the group of dozens who marched through the streets shouting for peace.
"We will bring peace in to our streets, and we will end the gun violence," Hogsett said, "but we need everyone in the community to participate, to play a role."
Three more peace walks will be held around Indianapolis in the coming weeks.
