Marion County has released finalized plans for the November general elections. The Marion County Election Board said plans include a total of 188 vote centers on Election day.
That’s more than eight times the centers available for the June primaries, when resources were short because of the COVID-19 crisis.
There are a number of new locations, including Bankers Life Fieldhouse and Lucas Oil Stadium. But the overall number of sites is down from last year -- part of an earlier decision to streamline locations.
For vote by mail Deputy Director of the Marion County Clerk's Office Russell Hollis said voters in Indiana still must have a reason, like being out of town or being over the age of 65.
"All you have to do is check a box," Hollis said. "Check the box that best fits your situation or best fits the reason that you want to vote absentee by mail."
Nearly 20,000 people have already requested ballots. The city hired seasonal staff to process them.
Hollis said there’s been a positive response from election volunteers.
"We’ve seen a lot of folks channel that enthusiasm into wanting to work at the polls," Hollis said.
There will be five satellite locations for early voting, in addition to early voting at the clerk’s office in the Indianapolis City-County Building. Those sites are:
- Krannert Park Community Center, 605 S. High School Rd.
- Lawrence Township Schools Administration Building, 6501 Sunnyside Rd.
- Perry Township Government Center, 4928 Shelby St.
- St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th St.
- Warren Township Government Center, 501 N. Post Rd.
The voter registration deadline is Monday, Oct. 4.
