Ten housing proposals will receive funding through a new initiative aimed at transforming vacant properties in Indianapolis.

The Vacant to Vibrant program awarded $5.86 million to support the creation of 49 new homes, which includes rental and homeownership projects. Both federal and local funding are being used to flip properties from the city land bank.

The effort was announced early this year as a way to close the affordable housing gap.

In a statement, Mayor Joe Hogsett said the program is an important part of city housing solutions.

“At a time when housing availability is limited across Indianapolis neighborhoods, our comprehensive strategy is to leverage every tool and resource to create more pathways for residents to access quality affordable housing,” he said. “Vacant to Vibrant streamlines the development process by directly pairing property sales with local and federal funding.”

Organizations who received proposal funding include the Englewood Community Development Corporation, Flanner House, Martindale Brightwood CDC, Southeast Neighborhood Development Inc., Westside Community Development Corporation, Edna Martin Christian Center,  Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership, and Intend Indiana.
