A man was shot by an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer Friday morning after officers responded to reports of an armed adult male actively firing shots in a northeast side neighborhood and exhibiting “erratic behavior."
IMPD identifed the man as 31-year-old Dontriell Hood. The police officer who shot Hood has been identifed as Connor Finch, an eight-year veteran with IMPD. He has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
IMPD said on Friday that Hood was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition. The shooting occurred on the 3900 block of Caroline Avenue.
According to IMPD, when officers arrived on the scene, they parked their vehicles in the street to create a space between themselves and Hood. Officers gave him verbal commands to drop his weapon and lie flat on the ground.
Hood initially complied with the commands and laid down with his weapon next to him, police said. Officers then asked Hood to stand up and walk toward them. Hood then stopped and began “rapidly moving” in the direction of where he left his firearm, police said.
Officers told Hood, “Don’t do that,” and Hood continued to move in the direction of the firearm, according to IMPD.
“At some point,” an officer fired their weapon, striking Hood, police said.
IMPD said on Nov. 13 that video surveilllance footage shows Hood pick up the firearm before the officer discharged their weapon.
Hood was taken into custody and officers provided medical aid at the scene. He was then transported to a nearby hospital.
Hood was arrested for resisting law enforcement, unlawful carrying of a firearm and criminal recklessness, police said.
This marks the 15th incident in which Indianapolis police have been involved in a shooting this year, and the 11th since the beginning of August.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. The officer who fired their weapon has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
