An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer was involved in a fatal shooting on the city’s northwest side Wednesday. The incident happened near 71st St. and Zionsville Rd., close to Eagle Creek Park.

Police responded to reports of a person being shot. That person was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

IMPD then responded with an investigation at the scene, and set up a perimeter with information that the suspect who shot the first victim was still in the vicinity. Soon after the officer-involved shooting happened.

IMPD says the suspect shot at police, who then returned fire. The suspect was hit and taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

A few schools were placed on lockdown during the response. At least one body-worn camera was activated during the incident.

The officer who fired his weapon is on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
