Twelve million dollars in federal Build Grant money will fund a major project to overhaul State Road 37 in Noblesville.
This overhaul of State Road 37, which officials say is plagued with congestion and safety issues, continues a project that started construction in Fishers in 2019. The project will replace four intersections and add a series of traffic circles.
The Noblesville stretch of the project is still in the design phase — the Indiana Department of Transportation, or INDOT, is asking community members for their input.
Noblesville Mayor Chris Jensen says community feedback is essential.
"We know projects like this are… they're transformational for a community, but they can be very difficult for business owners, you know, and also community members,” Jensen said. “We want them to have a seat at the table early and often to be engaged in the conversation."
The southern two intersections of the Noblesville overhaul are expected to cost over $150 million.
Jordan Yaney is INDOT's director of public relations.
"This is a major overhaul of a four-lane highway and and four pretty busy intersections,” Yaney said. “So it is a big task, but it is something that is needed. And it's something that's going to benefit the community for a long time."
The financial burden of the project is split between INDOT and the City of Noblesville, with the former responsible for 80% and the latter covering the remaining 20%.
Jensen said money from the BUILD Grant will help the city cover its share for the project, freeing up funds to invest in the community.
“Anytime we can we can partner with our friends at the the feds to offset the cost of this, it just frees up dollars for us to continue to invest in our community,” Jensen said.
