Official trick-or-treat hours in Indianapolis this year are 6 to 8 p.m. The city’s 44 fire departments will pass out candy during those hours. Officials also announced Indianapolis police will patrol neighborhoods during the official hours to keep the night safe for trick-or-treaters.

The Indianapolis mayor’s office sent out a collection of safety tips for trick-or-treaters and their families. They advise that costumes incorporate light colors or reflective tape to keep people visible. They also advise anyone using the roads on Halloween evening to go slowly and to watch their surroundings carefully.

If suspicious items are found after trick-or-treating ends, contact police as soon as possible at 317-327-3811. If injury is involved, dial 911.

Several free trick-or-treat events are planned, including the 30th Annual Safe Night Halloween at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The indoor event is 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday and will include decorated vehicles and booths, costumes, candy and activities from community groups.

IMPD will host safe trick-or-treating events at 1150 S. Shelby Street, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and in Warren at IMPD’s Hershyville Training Village, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at 901 N. Post Rd.
