Dozens of Indiana residents are sharing their stories of what it’s like to be part of the LGBT community in a new exhibit at the Indiana History Center.
Indianapolis photographer Mark Lee conducted the interviews featured in the exhibit.
“To me it was very important to get a variety of input so that when people look at this 100 years from now they will be able to have a better idea of what life was really like during this period of our history,” he says.
The Indiana Historical Society started collecting photographs and personal items for the exhibit a few years ago. Then Lee reached out to a few people that he knew to share their experiences.
“When we were done with the interview they would all of a sudden be like, 'well have you talked to so and so,' or 'you really need to talk to this person, that would be a great person for you to interview.'”
Lee says the stories come from a wide variety of individuals yet all have a common message of acceptance and love.
The exhibit will run through Nov. 4.
