Melissa Davis: Radar Gold is an established and innovative Indianapolis-based band with a wife and husband duo at the center of the group. As they prepare for a new album release, the band showcased their new songs at WFYI's Small Studio.

Before playing in Radar Gold, band members Nic Clark, Emma Clark, Jacob Kozlowski, and Nick Smith were in popular indie bands around the city like The Ramettes, Chives, Cherries, and The Constants.

Radar Gold formed around 2018 and as the band progressed, so did the duo's relationship. Radar Gold's music has changed and grown over the years, and this new album explores a delicate side of that.

Emma Clark: This new album is called "Fortune Teller." It's kind of like our softer side. It has some heavier songs, but it has its own kind of sound. I don't know, how would you describe it?

Nic Clark: Yeah, I mean, we just basically took the sound of the first record and kept evolving on it, and just took the next logical step in it, but it did soften up a bit.

Emma Clark: I like to focus on the vocals. I'm like -- just let me at it.

Davis: The band put the new album together collaboratively.

Emma Clark: We try to write together. Usually, Nic will kind of give me a little idea. He's like, "I got this,” and then I'll be like, "Okay, well, how about this word? How about that word,” and then yes, mostly we work together.

Davis: During the recording, Radar Gold dressed up for the event, wearing stage-ready outfits with sequins and sparkling jewels, along with glittery makeup to complement their theatrical lights and artistic personal touches for the Small Studio set.

Guitarist and singer Emma Clark says that musical theater influences the band's style and sound.

Emma Clark: Like I said, I'm very musical, like, as in theater kind of person. I really kind of gravitate towards that – old musicals and just like really powerful singers that kind of grab your attention.

I mean, our thing is kind of blending those two styles, like the theater, the musical aspect, and then kind of more of like a rock and roll, psychedelic. That's kind of the best part of this, is just trying to blend those things together.

Davis: The new album from Radar Gold, “Fortune Teller,” will be out early this summer.
