The Indianapolis Metro Police Department has a number of tips to make sure families have a safe time trick-or-treating this Halloween.

Some have to do with costumes — make sure face masks don't obscure vision and that clothing is light-colored or partially reflective. It can also help to carry flashlights if trick-or-treating extends beyond daylight hours.

For those not going door to door on Halloween night, IMPD advises motorists to slow down and be extra aware of their surroundings. They also tell people passing out goodies to only give out wrapped or packaged treats.

If suspicious items are found in any trick-or-treating hauls, contact police as soon as possible at 317-327-3811. If injury is involved, dial 911.
