IndyGo is proposing a dollar increase to bus fares. The move would bump regular rides from $1.75 to $2.75. The price hike would be the first for the transportation agency since 2009.
IndyGo says the fare adjustment is needed to offset increased operating costs including fuel, labor and maintenance.
IndyGo Access, a service for people with disabilities, would also experience a rate hike. Trips with the paratransit service would increase from $3.50 to $5.50 within the ADA Area, $7 to $11 in the Premium Area, and $10 to $15 for Same Day trips.
IndyGo President and CEO Jennifer Pyrz said the goal is to achieve a modernized system.
“For Indianapolis to become a ‘world-class’ city, IndyGo must become a ‘world-class’ system. We’re committed to operating a network that works for everyone, and these updates are designed to ensure our system is safe and reliable for all who depend on it now and into the future."
If approved by the IndyGo Board of Directors the agency will stop issuing paper passes. It will move riders to the My Key electronic fare program. IndyGo said their most frequent riders will benefit from the program due to caps.
The public will have a chance to weigh in on the move starting in June. After the public input period the proposal needs final approval from the IndyGo board.
Any changes would happen next year.
