IndyGo announced Tuesday it will adopt a new system for processing payments, and it means big changes for riders.

MyKey, the current account system for riders, will be retired by the end of July. It will be replaced by MyKey+.

Some features will be familiar for current IndyGo customers, like fare capping and managing accounts online.

One change is that the new system allows customers to tie different MyKey+ cards to one account, meant to help families or friends manage payments more easily.

MyKey+ will also allow accounts to go a short way into a negative balance — that way riders won't be stranded if they need one more ride before they can add funds to their account.

But perhaps the most significant upcoming change is that IndyGo will remove ticket vending machines at their platforms, the downtown transit center, and at super stops. Instead IndyGo will partner with over 100 retail locations around the city — like Kroger, Walgreens, CVS, and Dollar General — to allow riders to add funds to their cards while doing their shopping.

Riders can also sign up for MyKey+ by downloading the mobile app, or through the MyKey+ web portal.

The last day riders can spend money from their old MyKey account will be August 31.

IndyGo will host open houses to answer questions from community members about the new account system, get people signed up, and to distribute MyKey+ cards. The open houses will be at the Julia M. Carson Transit Center from July 6 – 17 and Aug. 17 – 28, between 7 a.m. – 9 a.m. and 5 p.m – 7 p.m.
