Incumbent Republican Congressman Jim Baird and Democratic candidate Roger Day are running for Indiana’s 4th U.S. House District, which includes Benton, Boone, Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Fountain, Hendricks, Howard Jasper, Montgomery, Morgan, Newton, Putnam, Tippecanoe, Warren, and White counties. Baird was first elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2020.

WFYI sent each candidate the same questions to help voters prepare for early voting and Election Day, Nov. 8. Baird did not respond. Day's answers are below.

Editor’s note: Candidate responses were edited for AP Style and grammar, and any numbers used were checked for accuracy. When a statement required more clarification or could not be independently verified, WFYI reached out to candidates before publication. Those instances, and those candidate responses, are noted throughout in editors’ notes.

Roger Day

What do you see as the most pressing issue lawmakers will address in the next two years?

Stopping MAGA and climate change.

U.S. inflation has eased in recent months, but hit a 40-year high of 9.1 percent earlier this year. What action would you propose to lessen the burden of inflation?

Investigate price gouging! There is no reason for high inflation! Price increases far outpace inflation! When Biden tried to form a committee to look into oil company profits [with no repub support] just the threat brought down gas prices, fast! Inflation is really around 4 percent. I do the shopping at my house, and food has gone up 35 percent to 100 percent on most items -- eggs, meat, milk, and produce. It doesn't add up at even 8 percent.**

**Editors’ Note: WFYI editors emailed Day for more information, as these numbers do not match those we found in the most recent version of the Consumer Price Index. Day emailed this response:

“They are including price gouging as inflation! Which isn't in the definition of Inflation! Check the profits of companies that are causing inflation! If it was just inflation; profits would be down too! They are charging what the market is willing to pay! People still pay it because they can! Check out restaurants, shopping centers! Lots are full! Wages increased 5% and business wants that money and more! 8.9 minus 5 equals 4.9% of true inflation!!!”

Legislation introduced in U.S. Senate would prohibit abortions after 15 weeks. What role should the federal government play in deciding abortion law?

I believe some small role in the last three months. Before that, none! Brain function is the beginning of life and viability to survive outside the womb!

President Biden’s executive order canceled $10,000 in student debt for low to middle income borrowers. What additional action, if any, would you propose to address student debt?

I support this completely.

Will you accept the results of the 2022 election, win or lose?

Yes!
