Lauren Chapman / IPB News file photoIndiana will hold its primary election Tuesday, May 5. In Marion County, Democratic and Republican voters will select their nominees for a range of federal, state legislative, local and township offices to advance to the Nov. 3 general election.
The Democratic primary for Indiana's 7th Congressional District — which covers most of Indianapolis — is among the most crowded races. U.S. Rep. André Carson faces three challengers: Denise Paul Hatch, George Hornedo and Destiny Wells. Republicans Patrick McAuley and Felipe Rios are also competing for their party's nomination. In the 6th Congressional District, four Democrats and two Republicans — including U.S. Rep. Jefferson Shreve — filed to run.
Indiana Senate Districts 29 and 31 each drew contested primaries in both parties. District 46 has a three-way Democratic primary.
Among countywide offices, two Democrats are running for Marion County sheriff: Gregory Patrick and Kelvis T. Williams. Three Democrats — Kate Sweeney Bell, Bobby Kern and Karla Lopez-Owens — are competing for clerk of the circuit court. Democrat Ryan Mears and Republican Philip Foust are each running unopposed for Marion County prosecutor.
Township offices — including trustee, small claims court judge and constable — will appear for voters in Center, Decatur, Franklin, Lawrence, Perry, Pike, Warren, Washington and Wayne townships.
Some races will not be on the May primary ballot. School board seats for the 11 Marion County school corporations are reserved for the November general election. Statewide offices such as Secretary of State, State Comptroller and State Treasurer will also not be on the primary ballot. Those candidates are nominated through their respective party conventions.
Democratic and Republican voters will also see precinct committee person races and state convention delegate contests on their May ballots.
You can find a sample ballot of the primary election at the Marion County Election Board's website.
The voter registration deadline for the primary is April 6, by close of business at local registration offices, or by midnight for online applications at indianavoters.in.gov.
