Indiana Democrats denounced misleading text messages sent by a Republican-aligned group.
Some Indiana voters received texts messages warning early voting was ending nearly a week before it does. Others received messages saying their early votes had not been recorded. These texts include a link to the America First Policies’ website – a national conservative nonprofit.
Indiana Democrats Chairman John Zody says he believes these are part of a misinformation campaign.
“This is either disinformation; major major mistakes on behalf of the Republican Party, that needs to be addressed and needs to be called out, and the right information needs to get out there,” Zody says.
Either way, he says it needs to be corrected.
“This is a constitutional right that everyone in this state, who’s eligible, needs to be able to exercise – bar none,” he says.
America First Policies spokesman Alex Titus said in a statement the organization did not send the messages about votes not being recorded.
"America First Policies sent texts urging people to vote early or by absentee, which directed them to a website that clearly states early voting ends on Nov. 5," Titus said in a statement. "There is nothing about this that’s a misinformation campaign."
Early voting in Indiana runs through noon Monday, Nov. 5, local time.
