Primary turnout is up in Marion County, but Indiana's voting numbers remain consistently low

Almost 15,000 more voters turned out in Marion County compared to the primary election in 2024.

Voter turnout numbers are coming in after Indiana's 2026 primary election.

Though the vote will not be certified until May 18, the Indiana Secretary of State gathered preliminary data.

It shows low — and consistent — primary turnout from Indiana voters. In the 2024 primary election, just over 17% of voters made their way to the polls. This year early data shows just under 17% turned out.

Marion County did see an increase in voters. Preliminary data shows 15.7% of registered voters cast their vote, up from 13.5% in 2024.

In Hamilton County, just over 50,000 residents cast their ballots in the primary. That's roughly 18% of registered voters, 1 percentage point lower than in 2024.

As of May 6, officials say military and overseas ballots are still coming in.

Correction: An earlier version of this story stated Hamilton County's 2026 primary turnout was "1% lower" than in 2024, but should have stated it was "1 percentage point" lower than in 2024.
