WFYI participates in Local News Day initiative, launches new website
WFYI is proud to participate in Local News Day, a national day of action that connects communities with local, independent and trusted local journalism. Led by Montana Free Press and more than 1,000 local newsrooms nationwide, Local News Day brings together businesses, nonprofits, influencers and everyday Americans to celebrate and uplift local journalism. The initiative highlights the role local news plays in civic engagement, accountability, and informed communities, and to encourage audiences to actively support reliable, fact‑based reporting.
WFYI’s celebration of Local News Day reinforces its commitment to serving central and northwest Indiana and collaborating with partners around the state. As part of the Local News Day celebration, WFYI will host a special edition of News & Brews on April 9 at Bier Brewery in Noblesville. The evening will feature trivia hosted by WFYI News reporters, testing participants’ knowledge of current events and local journalism.
As funding cuts reshaped the statewide news landscape, WFYI took on a greater leadership role to help stabilize and sustain statewide journalism, investing in statehouse reporting and guiding collaboration among public media stations. This approach ensures critical state level news continues to be reported and shared across Indiana, even as the system evolves toward a more locally driven model.
This commitment to strengthening local journalism is also reflected in WFYI’s recent migration of wfyi.org to a new content management system supported by NPR. The new platform allows WFYI to host its website in a more cost-effective and scalable way, ensuring the organization can better serve audiences now and in the future. The redesigned site features a streamlined architecture that makes content easier to find and enables stronger collaboration among Indiana public media stations through a built-in news story-sharing platform.
For the 2026 midterm elections, a shared content management system will enable public media stations to more efficiently share content and create a collaborative statewide election landing page. The page will collect reporting, candidate profiles and explainers from all participating IPBS newsrooms.
Keep up with 2026 Primary Election coverage on this dedicated news page.
