FISHERS -- The City of Fishers has ordered a special census to account for its continued growth.
In 2010, when the last U.S. Census was completed, Fishers had a population of over 76,000 people. Now, the community that officially became a city earlier this year, may have more than 86,000 residents says Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness.
"So that’s 10,000 people that have come into our community that from a revenue perspective are not counted when considering motor vehicle highway funds and other types of revenue we get from the state," said Fadness.
The partial special census is expected to cost about $373,000, but Fadness estimates they’ll see more than $1.4 million in revenue as early as 2017 by including those new residents. Otherwise they’d have to wait until after the 2020 census for the funds.
The partial census will only focus on high growth areas, and residents can expect to be counted starting later this year.
U.S. Census Bureau estimates released in May show Fishers is the fastest growing community in Indiana, with an estimated 3 percent annual growth rate.
