IndyGo and the Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development announce plans for a new bus driver training center on a long abandoned site.
The new training facility will provide classrooms and acres of space for behind the wheel training. IndyGo plans to hire more than 200 new operators as part of its goal to increase service by 70 percent.
The center will be on the site of the former Carrier Bryant manufacturing plant on the near west side. It closed in the early eighties and was used as storage for decades. The city then worked with the EPA and other agencies to undergo years of environmental assessment and clean up.
The new building will also serve as a backup operations location for IndyGo. The city is accepting requests for the redevelopment of remaining portions of the site.
