SAVI Talks: Community Conditions Shaping Household Financial Stability in Indiana
In Indiana, many households that were once considered financially secure are now facing increased risk of instability due to rising costs of living and limited financial buffers/safety nets to fall back on. County-level analysis of ALICE data (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) shows a different on-ground reality from the federally demarcated poverty line. This report explores how economic security is becoming more out of reach for many families. By examining ALICE households and geographic patterns, particularly where rent, childcare, and grocery costs consume a disproportionate share of earnings, this analysis explores the question: What socioeconomic indicators are early-warning, high-risk factors for moving into the ALICE population, beyond income alone?
Through this collaboration between The Polis Center, SAVI, and WFYI, we'll explore what factors beyond income put Indiana households at greater risk of falling into ALICE status.
