Indiana is hosting disaster recovery centers in three counties around the state to help residents impacted by historic August storms and flash floods. The events are currently scheduled through Saturday and will include representatives from government agencies.
Storms rolled through Indiana around mid-August, causing flash flooding and widespread damage across the state, including in Gary, Indianapolis and Muncie. Gov. Mike Braun requested a federal disaster declaration and announced it had been approved on Aug. 25, unlocking individual and public assistance for specific communities across the state.
In the aftermath, the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency coordinated with state and local governments to help flood survivors apply for assistance and access resources at mobile events across the state. Now, the state is offering the one-stop shops at three initial locations.
“To date, nearly 3,000 Hoosiers have utilized mobile registration intake centers and one-stop shop locations to receive recovery support,” Braun said in a statement.
Residents are advised to bring a valid state ID to the event.
This week, the hubs are planned for Marion, Porter and Wayne counties. They open at 9 a.m. and closing hours vary by location.
- Marion County: Traders Point Christian Church, Midtown Campus, 2350 East 62nd St. Hours: Wednesday Sept. 9, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Thursday Sept. 10 and Friday Sept. 11, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.; and Saturday Sept. 12, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. ET.
- Porter County: Woodland Park (Sycamore Room) at 2100 Willowcreek Road, Portage. Hours: Wednesday Sept. 9 - Friday Sept. 11, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. CT; Saturday Sept. 12, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. CT.
- Wayne County: Cambridge City Christian Church at 106 West Church Street, Cambridge City. Hours: Wednesday Sept. 9 to Friday Sept. 11, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.; Saturday Sept. 12, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency will be available to help people applying for individual assistance, while the U.S. Small Business Administration will be available to help individuals with disaster loans.
State agencies will also be at the hubs to help with:
- Temporary housing assistance
- Crisis counseling and mental health service referrals
- Reviewing insurance policies and replacing documents
- Support with motor vehicle registrations and licenses
- Public health resources
- Assistance with State Disaster Relief Fund applications
At the one-stop shop in Indianapolis, the Marion County Public Health Department, the Department of Business and Neighborhood Services and the mayor’s neighborhood advocates will also be present to help residents.
