The plan to divide local property tax revenue between traditional school districts and charter schools is now part of the Indiana House Republican push for property tax relief.

The enrollment at charter schools partnering with IPS has grown from nearly 8% in 2016 to 35.4% this school year. 

House Bill 1515 specifies that a charter, accredited nonpublic, and traditional public school is allowed as a permitted use in all zoning districts.

Senate Bill 518 would gradually redirect millions of dollars each year from traditional public schools to charter schools.

IPS Superintendent Aleesia Johnson said the proposed revenue shift in Senate Bill 518 could force the district to close at least 20 schools.

Some say House Bill 1136 may be intended to start discussions about giving charter schools a share of local property tax dollars, which they do not receive now.

The Indianapolis Public Schools board says it will fight against a bill that, if passed, would dissolve the district.

The proposed Indiana House Bill 1136 would dissolve Indianapolis Pubic Schools, Gary Community Schools, Tri-Township Schools, Union Schools, and Cannelton City Schools.
