House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis) says he’s still not prepared to move forward with a total abortion ban in Indiana.

That’s even as many believe a new balance on the U.S. Supreme Court could overturn Roe v. Wade.

An ultra-conservative faction of the state’s anti-abortion movement pushed for a total ban on abortion the last few legislative sessions. Those bills did not get a hearing or a vote.

That put Republican Bosma in the crosshairs of the far-right wing of his party – even if he says he agrees with their goal.

“If I could do so with a wave of a wand, I would,” Bosma says.

But as President Donald Trump considers his nomination to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy – seen as a moderate voice on abortion – Bosma says he wants to get a better sense of the new balance on the Court.

We also want to be sure that we’re on sound footing in the Supreme Court to overturn a very long-standing precedent to make the state’s time, effort, and expense worthwhile,” Bosma says.

President Trump is expected to announce his nominee soon.
