The Department of Metropolitan Development announced a $345,000 grant to clean up the contaminated former Colonial Bakery site.

Portions of the site contain heavy metals and petroleum compounds. To help fix the contamination, the city was awarded a revolving loan fund subgrant via the Indiana Finance Authority. Through the grant, about 4,500 tons of surface soil and asphalt will be removed.

Department director Emily Mack says that will allow someone to buy the site and put to good use.

“Today we are celebrating more than just remediation of this site, but we are also celebrating what this site can be and how it will once again serve as an asset to the neighborhood,” Mack says.

The former bakery site is in Reagan Park -- on the north east side of downtown, near Fall Creek Place. The Colonial Baking company used the site for warehouse storage, truck loading and truck repair through the 1990s.

The remediation is planned to be completed this fall.
