Around 200 city and business leaders, residents and other stakeholders attended the second annual State of Downtown presentation at Union Station Tuesday night.

Downtown Indy says the city's core is thriving and growing. A state of downtown event pointed to increased housing, strong visitation and tourism, great walkability, safety and cleanliness as proof of the strength of downtown Indianapolis.

Downtown Indy President Sherry Seiwert says downtown has experienced a surge of activity in just the past year.

"Examples are all around us," says Seiwert, "with the launch of the new bike share program and with the ground breaking of the transit center, the opening of the new Marsh store, the organutan center, Eskenazi Hospital and so much more."

The group says there are currently 40 development projects worth over $1 billion in the works including Lilly expansions, the YMCA at City Way and Market Square Tower.

Downtown Indy also unveiled a new website and residential memberships program.
