The flu is quickly spreading across the state.  The most recent report from the Indiana State Department of Health detailing flu activity in Indiana finds 66 flu related deaths, up from 36 a week before.

Dr. Jerome Adams, Indiana State Health Commissioner, says the CDC is predicting a more deadly season because of this year’s predominant strain.

"The CDC estimates that an average of about 28,000 to 29,000 people died from the flu during predominate H2N3 seasons in the past whereas about 11,000 people died during non-H2N3 predominate season," says Adams.

Although this year’s flu is turning out to be more deadly for older patients, younger patients make up most of the people catching the virus.

Adams says even though this year’s flu vaccination is not an exact match it will still provide protection and help lessen symptoms if you do catch the virus.

He says staying at home if you’re sick and washing hands also prevents the spread of influenza.
